Ninety minutes later, the voice of his ex-partner rang through the stairwell, music to his ears. "Knock, knock!"

"In here," Reese called out.

A minute later, the bedroom door opened, and Brent leaned against the door jam, his arms across his chest, the corners of his mouth turned up in a smirk.

"Well, aren't you a sight for sore eyes. Or maybe just an eyesore."

"Yeah, yeah, right back at you. A little help?"

"In a minute. Right now I'm just savoring seeing the big, bad Reese Williamson flat on his back and completely at my mercy."

Beside him, Teagan giggled, catching Brent's attention. "This is her, huh? The damsel in distress you went rogue for?" His gaze flicked over Teagan, taking her in with scrutinous appraisal. "I approve."

"I didn't call you out here for your approval," Reese snarled, thankful that Teagan had managed in the last ninety minutes to get her underwear and pants back on, even if they hadn't managed to do much else. "I called you for your help. Did you bring the crutches?"

"I did," Brent confirmed, making no move to get them. Instead he entered the room, sitting down on the edge of the bed. "As well as a few other things I thought you might need. Now, let me get this straight, when the guy that was after her—"

"Her brother Gary," Reese supplied, trying not to roll his eyes.

"When her brother tried to mow her down with his car, you pushed her out of the way and took a Lincoln Towncar straight to your good hip. And then, when you fell, you landed on your bad hip, pretty much taking you completely out of commission." He raised his eyebrows and Reese nodded. "So… why does she need crutches?"

"We don't need to talk about that," Teagan answered.

"Well, as I was in pain and going on no sleep after driving half the night to get here, we took a nap, or at least I did. Teagan here decided to sneak out and go for a little hike in the mountains."

"Oooh." Brent smirked; Reese could see understanding dawning. He cut his gaze to Teagan who wore a sheepish smile, and then back to Reese. "And this is the one you've been searching for for the last few months? Where did you say you eventually found her?"

"Beauties and Beasts. The kink club," Reese clarified, even though he knew Brent knew it.

"Ah, then… I'm guessing that didn't work out so well for you." His comment was directed at Teagan, who cast her gaze down to the floor. Her cheeks flushed a bright pink.

Never in a million years would Reese have pegged Teagan as the kind of submissive to give in to a man simply because he copped an authoritative tone, but she did just that.

"No, sir," she said, casting Reese a questioning glance.

Good. She was only doing it because she thought Brent might be an extension of himself. Still, even knowing “sir” was a generic expression of respect, not unique to the kink scene and likely didn't mean anything, Reese hated hearing her address Brent that way.
